Obituary for Douglas M. Karlen

Douglas M. Karlen passed away March 19, 2018 in Chicago, IL. Born October 4, 1949, he was the beloved son of the late Harvey M. Karlen and the late Mollie, nee Bossen, Karlen and brother of David (Gail) Karlen. He was the stepson of June Atlas Karlen, stepbrother of Susan Atlas Kelley (Stephen) and Caron Atlas, and uncle of Aaron (Amanda) Karlen and Naomi (Darin) Karlen and Alex Kelley, Rachel (Zach) Kelley Schulman, and Rebecca Zoe Kelley.

Douglas thrived professionally for 40 years at Chicago Title Insurance Company, holding various legal positions including Vice President and Regional Counsel. In this role he was chief underwriting counsel for title operations in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. His deep expertise made him a highly valued colleague and his interest in others and sense of humor made him a cherished friend. He loved his family and friends and had a great appreciation of opera and baseball.

Douglas received his B.A. from the University of Illinois College of Arts and Sciences in 1971. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and was honored as one of the One Hundred Outstanding Seniors. He then attended the University of Illinois College of Law, earning a J.D. degree in 1974 and finishing in the top ten percent of the graduating class. He was a member of the board of editors of the U of I Law Forum (now Law Review). In 2000 Douglas received the Delta Sigma Omicron Harold Scharper Alumni Achievement Award.

Among his many accomplishments Douglas created the Douglas M. Karlen Fund for Accessible Learning Technology at the University of Illinois, to develop and deliver assistive technology to students with sensory impairments. At the age of three Douglas sustained corneal damage from chicken pox, resulting in low vision. This did not deter him from excelling in education and professionally. As Doug’s legacy, and his investment in the future, the Fund will provide students the opportunity to succeed.

Contributions in Douglas Karlen’s memory may be made to the University of Illinois Foundation earmarked to this fund. (https://uif.uillinois.edu)

Douglas enriched many people’s lives. We will greatly miss him.
