Obituary for Arnold Bernstein

Arnold Bernstein
Arnold Bernstein, age 94, beloved husband for 65 years of the late Frances Rose, nee Helfand, cherished father of Scott Bernstein (Christine Rose Imhoff) and Adrian Bernstein (Tom) Takir, loving grandfather of Serena and Rebecca Bernstein and Alexis (Brian) Mitchell, devoted son of the late Shirley and Herman Bernstein, dear brother of the late Marvin (Dorothy) Brent. Special thanks to his caregivers at Symphony Rehab in Evanston and Journeycare Hospice. Arnold served in the Army Air Corps as a flight instructor and engine specialist both in the air and on the ground. This included several postings including Roswell N.M. He met Francis Helfand while on leave at Great Lakes Naval Station at an extended family party. They were engaged 6 weeks later. He had a long and distinguished career in the camera business, starting on the road with his father in sales, then moving to inside sales management and instruction. He ended his career as President of Wolk Camera in Chicago followed by a few years of consulting. Arnold and Fran moved with their children from Hyde Park to Park Forest, a new planned community in 1955. He was a passionate reader, gaining recognition from local libraries. He did the crossword in The Daily News each night in pen after taking the train home from work. He was always a learner. Had to know how things worked, and spent many years taking things apart. Often putting them back together. Otherwise making friends with local handymen. His closeness with his wife’s family gave him much pleasure and many weekends were spent back in the city with grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins by the dozens. He will be missed by the nieces and nephews who loved his sense of humor. Graveside services Thursday 1:30 PM at Shalom Memorial Park, Rand Rd and Rte 53, Arlington Heights. Contributions in Arnold’s name to the Alzehimer’s Association act.alz.org/donate or the National MS Society www.nationalmssociety.org would be appreciated.
